Annual Tourism Event to Showcase
the Hidden Treasures of Northern Japan and Beyond
New York, NY, February 22, 2016 – Japan Week, New York City's premiere Japanese travel and tourism event organized by Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), is back for its 5th year on March 10th-12th, 2016 at Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall. The year 2015 marked the historic achievement for Japan tourism to welcome more than 1 million Americans to Japan, totaling 1.03 million annual visitors from the US. This year, Japan Week 2016 spotlights the regions of Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku as exciting opportunities for travel. 30 exhibitors, including businesses from New York City and Japan, travel agencies, and local Japanese governments, will be in attendance at Japan Week.
From world-famous ski resorts and national parks to delectable local cuisine and spectacular festivals, Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku are home to hidden regional gems that even seasoned travelers miss. With Japanese innovative technology, the brand-new Hokkaido Shinkansen is scheduled to open on March 26th, 2016, allowing travelers to take a bullet train direct from Tokyo to Hokkaido to experience the region’s unparalleled seafood and see its late-blooming cherry blossoms.
A traditional symbol of beauty and renewal in Japanese culture, cherry blossoms bloom every spring all over the country. Japan Week will incorporate a design of the characteristic swathes of pink petals across the event site and exhibitor booths, bringing the Japanese "Sakura-Viewing" experience to Vanderbilt Hall.
Visitors to Japan Week will be able to get free Japan tourism materials, taste authentic foods and confectionaries from Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku, learn traditional arts and crafts such as ukiyo-e and kabuki makeup from certified Japanese masters, discover the charming folklore, the unique cultural heritage, and pristine nature of the entire Tohoku area in northern Japan, and even fill out a questionnaire at the event for a chance to win a free ticket to Japan. To celebrate the Japanese spirit of combining innovative technology with nature, Japan Week 2016 will also feature a "Kaiten Sushi" conveyor belt sushi restaurant serving top-class offerings from northern Japan.
