Japan’s Shinkansen high-speed rail lines form the nation’s main transportation artery linking major cities. This system is constantly expanding.
On March 26, 2016 the Hokkaido Shinkansen will open connecting Aomori (Shin-Aomori) and Hakodate (Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto) while being linked with the existing Tohoku Shinkansen. Travel time from Tokyo to Hakodate will shrink to approximately 4 hours from the present 5 hours 30 minutes. The trains will use E5 and H5 type rail cars and have a top speed of 200 miles per hour. They will pass through the Seikan Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world located at 330 feet below the seabed.
Hakodate is the third largest city on the island of Hokkaido. The night view of the city from Mt. Hakodate is spectacular, while in the daytime you can enjoy historic Goryokaku Fort and the pretty park that surrounds it. And don’t fail to sample Hakodate cuisine: the very freshest and most delicious seafood of the far north.
