Useful Vocaburary - Obon -

Obon is a summer festival in which people show their respect for people who have passed away. It is a time when many families gather together to honor, via a series of rituals, the spirits of their deceased relatives. Obon, a highly localized celebration, is feted at different times in different areas in Japan. Generally, it is held during the three day period between August 13th - 16th, but in Tokyo it is held around July 15th; in some other areas it is the 15th day of the seventh lunar calendar (not the calendar we currently use), so the day changes every year.

Editor's Note

The year 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of Japan's tourism office in New York City. Founded in New York City's Rockefeller Center in 1952, JNTO's New York office is commemorating the event on July 21st.

In 1952, the number of people travelling from the US to Japan was 13,746. Jumping forward to 2010, the number has increased to 727,234. The significantly increased cultural exposure between the people of the US and Japan has surely enhanced the friendly relations between the two countries.

More recently, according to the latest statistics, the number of tourists visiting Japan from US in June of this year surpassed the number of the same month in 2010 (pre-earthquake) for the first time. We are very happy to see such a quick recovery and really appreciate your continued interest in and support of Japan.

As many of you may have read, many airlines will add additional routes between the US and Japan. We hope that this added level of convenience will enhance your ability to plan a trip to visit Japan to enjoy its beauty and hospitality.
