Shuzenji Onsen - Shizuoka Prefecture

Continuing on our theme of budget travel, how about great things to do for fall? Well one of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty of the season is to take it all in while soaking in a luxurious natural hot spring. But Tina you say, "Ryokan Hot Springs are so expensive during the Koyo season!" Well that is true, however there a few tricks to get around the price of staying in a pricy ryokan.

Hakone Yuryo - Kanagawa Prefecture

First tip; day trips! Many popular hot springs areas are easily reached by day trips from large cities. One of the easiest examples is Hakone, which is easily reached within 1 to 2 hours from many areas of Tokyo. Most hot springs or ryokan with hot springs have an hourly or day use rate that is between $10 to $40 USD. Some will also have a day use package that includes a fantastic lunch and other amenities. So grab a towel and head out of town it's time for a soak!

Kurokawa Hot Springs Town - Kumamoto Prefecture

Second tip; passes! Whole towns have grown up around hot springs which give visitors many options for accommodations and facilities to choose from. In these towns it is very common to find a day or multi-day all you can visit pass. Some even have fully inclusive electronic tickets! The various passes can usually be found at the local Tourist Information Center (usually at or close to the main train station in the towns). With these passes visitors can enjoy soaking in a variety of hot springs without having to stay at the accompanying ryokan. There are usually smaller guest houses or local hotels available in the area that run much cheaper than a ryokan.

Shima Onsen - Gunma Prefecture

Third tip; private baths! We at JNTO realize that not everyone is comfortable getting naked in a hot spring with strangers, but never fear there is an option even for the shy among us! Many of the same ryokan and hot springs that offer day use rates will also have a private bath available for singles or small groups! Of course this does come with a small extra fee but it's usually not exorbitant. However, be sure to reserve ahead of time especially during peak periods.

Typical Ryokan Dinner - Japan Ryokan Association

Also, when considering a ryokan they will seem very pricey since they charge per-person. However, do remember the price usually include some meals and all you can soak. Some ryokan will even provide a town hot spring pass or have partnerships with other local facilities that add to the value.

If you are looking for a ryokan or hot spring to fit in your client's trip give JNTO a call or email, we're happy to help you find the perfect place to send them.

Soon it will be the changing of the seasons as the days grow shorter.
