Experience a slice of Old Tokyo life by visiting a Sento or public bath.

Typical Public Bath with a Mural of Mt. Fuji on the tiled wall.

Many years ago, because of population density many homes in Tokyo did not have bathing facilities, so public baths became very popular offering showers and large soaking tubs as well as refreshing drinks and relaxing areas. These businesses were a great way for workers and families to unwind after a long day. Unlike Onsen (hot springs), Sento are mostly focused on getting clean, though many have renewed their services and operations to be more like Spas to attract a younger crowd.

Even today there are still Sento in operation across the country, though there are not as many as in their heyday. In Tokyo there are some hundreds of public baths in operation but many have had to change their services to keep up with a changing world were almost everyone has private baths in their homes.

In Tokyo all Sento are regulated to a single price, 450 yen, or about $5USD. This includes use of the locker room, showers and baths. If you come empty handed most Sento also offer an amenities kit (soap, towel etc) for a small fee. Here is a quick guide on how to bathe at a Sento (scroll down for pictures and English).

Recently Sento have become a popular spot for long distance runners to begin and end their jogs in comfort. They can pay the fee and change into their running gear at the Sento, then at their return they can take a shower and relax their muscles in the bath. Many Sento are now offering special service packages to the runners including massages and drinks.

So next time your clients have some free time in the evening recommend they go relax at a local Sento and get a taste of what life used to be like in Japan. Their hotel staff can point them to the nearest public bath or here is a listing service of baths across Japan. Also, check out this more detailed Sento article from one of our partners.
