Experience Zen

The onsen (hot spring) can provide an atmosphere of tranquility, but a meditation and Zen experience at a temple cannot be overrated. Listed below are two Zen temples in Kyoto and one in Fukui. Many other temples, listed ones aside, also provide English instruction for those who would like to pursue a Zen experience during their visit!

Daihonzan Eihei-ji Temple (Fukui)

Zen

 

Opened in 1244, Eihei-ji Temple is the head temple of the Soto school, one of the Zen schools. This temple offers overnight Zen practice programs along with sitting meditation and sutra copying. During your stay, traditional temple cuisine is provided, and visitors are expected to follow the schedule and rules of the temple. Tours of the temple and temple grounds pleasantly enhance the experience.

Enko-ji Temple (Kyoto)

Enko-jiThis temple has been noted for its beautiful garden especially in fall when leaves change to vivid colors. Those well-versed in Zen as well as newcomers, groups and individuals, all are welcome to join Zen meditation every Sunday starting at 6:00 AM. (Appointment required by Saturday 5pm). The Cleaning and preaching experience need to be embraced during your visit while unique temple cuisine is provided you’re your enjoyment followed by the Zen meditation.

Shunkoin Temple (Kyoto)

ShukoinThe main garden of this temple is called the "Garden of Boulders." The temple offers scheduled meditation classes and classes in English on a variety of Zen related topics. There is a guesthouse with its own bathroom for visitors who wish to experience a Zen world for a period of time. Check the website for schedules and appointments.
