Being in the spotlight of contemporary art and design, Naoshima Island, the home of an outdoor modern art museum, is hosting a major international art festival. Collaborating with neighboring scattering islands, the Setouchi International Art Festival features world's top-level contemporary works. Known as a symbolic modern art site, Naoshima Island is already an international art destination with world renowned Tadao Ando's architecture and works of other leading creativity.
Setouchi, Japan's Seto Inland Sea, has long been one of the major art destinations in Japan with its outdoor art site on Naoshima Island. The venues make this festival ever so unique: The exhibitions are all on tiny islands scattered in the Inland Sea. Because of their location between the busy maritime traffic routes connecting the major islands, each island has received a variety of cultural influences, which has created one-of-a-kind artwork through collaborations with the latest contemporary artwork from all over the world.
The Art Festival introduces this innovative art project with six other tiny islands scattered in the Inland Sea, which are sites for the festival sites with contemporary artists' exhibitions from all over the world. Japan's artistic gems gather in this peaceful inland sea in greater numbers than ever before.
