US Travelers to Japan Soars in Declining Travel to Asia
While the US Federal Data shows declines in US travelers to Asia,
Japan sees the record high in monthly visitors from the US.
New York, NY, August 27, 2013: While American travelers skew to conservative vacation plans, Japan sees more optimistic trend in terms of Japan promotion in the US market. Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) released the latest monthly statistics on August 21, showing the steady increase of international visitors to Japan in the first half of 2013. Analyzing by market, the US has marked the record high monthly number of visitors in May 2013, and the number continued going up in the following months. June generally has the highest traffic from the US to Japan, and 81,000 US travelers visited Japan this June, 9.8% more than June from 2012, and the increase continued into July with 75,300 US visitors with 14.5% growth.
On the other hand, in the prolonged incomplete economic recovery, the US Office of Travel & Tourism Industries (OTTI), an office under the U.S. Department of Commerce, reported negative growth in US citizen travel to Asia in the first half of 2013. With both data combined, Japan is gaining popularity among US travelers to Asia.
The data indicates the consecutive increase in the US travelers to Japan since March 2012. Since the beginning of this year, the exchange rate shifted to favor to the US dollars, and new non-stop service routes were added between the US gateways to the ones in Japan, and both are very likely to contribute to the recent trend. Tourism soars in summer every year, and the figure from the first half of 2013 shows greater increases even in other markets such as Hong Kong and France. With all these increase, the overall total number of international visitors reached the record high in the first half of 2013 with 4,954,600 visitors, 22.8% more than the same term from 2012. Travelers from the US accounts for approximately 8% of the total international travelers to Japan in 2012, and JNTO is targeting 10 million visitors in the year of 2013.
