Winter Escapes in Japan

Norikura Highlands, Nagano Prefecture

Why go to Japan in winter? In addition to low airfare and affordable lodgings, visitors can avoid the high season crowds and experience parts of Japan that truly shine in fresh powdered snow:

Winter Festivals and Celebrations

Snow Festival, Sapporo City

Some of Japan's best festivals can only be experienced in winter, one of which is the Snow Festival in Hokkaido (Sapporo City), running February 5th - 11th 2015. Over 2 million visitors from across Japan and the globe come to admire the ice sculptures and enjoy the fireworks and festivities of the Sapporo Snow Festival. The Snow Light Path in Otaru, running February 6-15th 2015 in Hokkaido, is a stunning display of snow lanterns spread across the city. Even if you can't make it to Hokkaido, winter festivals are celebrated all throughout Japan, such as the Snow Festival in Tokamachi Niigata, running February 20-22nd 2015, only 2 hours away from Tokyo!

Winter Sports

Niseko Resort, Hokkaido

Japan is home to some of the best snow on Earth, with famous skiing/snowboarding resorts throughout Hokkaido, Tohoku, and the Hokuriku regions. Nagano and neighboring Niigata prefecture are famous winter sports locations that are only a 2-3 hour train ride away from Tokyo. Don't forget Niseko in Hokkaido, a skier's paradise with its steep slopes and breathtaking views! JNTO also has a listing of all ski resorts within Japan for your reference.

Shirakawa- go, Gifu Prefecture

Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture

Winter Landscapes

Some areas of Japan are best seen in winter. Japan's northern most region Hokkaido is a must-see winter destination with its fresh seafood, natural landscapes, healing hot springs and warm hospitality. Japan's Hokuriku and Tohoku areas also have breathtaking winter landscapes that are hauntingly beautiful, calm, and give visitors a different perspective on Japan and its culture.

Nabana no Sato, Kuwana City Mie Prefecture

Winter Lights

Japan shines brilliantly in winter months with its display of Christmas lights. Nabana no Sato in Mie Prefecture is a botanical garden that lights up from November to March, with a rainbow of illumination consisting of over 7 million LED lights! Kobe City's famed Luminarie display in December (December 4-15th 2014) is also a quick trip away from Osaka and is one of the city's annual highlights. Kyoto also shines in winter with a stunning night display of its ancient streets and temples through its Kyoto Hanatouro event. Find more information at our website.
