Japan has an efficient train transportation network but riding the train is no longer just for getting to the destination. Travelling by train has become one big amusement. "Joyful Trains" make a simple trip a lot more special. Here are some "Joyful Trains" operated by East Japan Railway Company.

Toreiyu Tsubasa – First ever train with footbath

Operating section: Hukushima – Shinjo (Yamagata Shinkansen route)

Joyful Trains

The Toreiyu Tsubasa train offers new style resort experiences while you are enjoying the series of splendid scenic views from your window. The passenger seats are designed as tatami straw mat seats with large birch wood tables. Footbaths are leisurely situated on a raised stone floor. Gaze out the window at the amazing landscape while relaxing in the footbath. After unwinding yourself in your footbath, enjoy the post bath lounge designed especially for those having finished their footbath. The lounge features tables made of cherry tree wood, Organic LED panels which exhibits goods from Yamagata and stone paved pathways. Enjoy a glass of local brewed Yamagata sake from the bar counter and have a unique resort experience on the train.

Resort Shirakami - Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the coast of Sea of Japan

Operating section: Aomori – Akita (Northern Tohoku Region)

Joyful Trains

Resort Shirakami is the rapid train connecting Aomori and Akita and takes about five hours. The route is bursting with great scenery like Senjyojiki beach, Shirakami-Sanchi a world Heritage Property. Cabins within the train are designed to maximize the magnificent view from passenger seats. The trains have box seats for family and friends to enjoy the time together. Observation rooms on the train with very large wide windows actually make the panoramic scenery and view even more enjoyable. Additionally, you can experience Japanese traditional music on board. A memorable story teller of legend with the Tsugaru dialect and Tsugaru Jamisen (a three stringed musical instrument) are offered for passenger entertainment.

SL Ginga – Enjoy the locomotive train as you experience your own "Night on the Galactic Railroad"

Operation Section: Hanamaki – Kamaish (Iwate prefecture, Tohoku Region)

Joyful Trains

An impressively restored C58 239 locomotive, the SL Ginga operates between Hanamaki and Kamaishi on the Kamaishi line in less than 5 hours. The passenger cars are decorated to bring Kenji Miyazawa’s world to life. He is one of Japan’s best loved authors of children’s literature from Hanamaki. His well-known book, "Night on the Galactic Railroad" is a story set in the Kamaishi line. The train expresses the worldview atmosphere and era of Miyazawa while emanating the culture, natural beauty and scenery of the Tohoku area. Trains have retro flavored interior and the gallery space exhibits a variety of objects associated with the rail line and the Tohoku area. Take a tour of the universe from Car 1 which is the world’s first optical planetarium ever to be ever located on a train. Explore Tohoku as you imagine your place in the galaxy!

Pokémon with You Train – Play, Explore and have a great time in the Pokémon Playroom!

Operating Section: (Kesennuma – Ichinoseki, Iwate prefecture, Tohoku Region and other)

Joyful Trains

The "Pokémon with You Train" was launched in 2012 to bring smiles to Tohoku children in the region who were devastated by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011. The train features more than 100 Pokémon characters in a forest concept. The train runs with two cars and one whole car is dedicated as a Pokémon playroom with huge cushions and a tunnel. Pokémon characters make announcements for stops and you can collect Pokémon stamps from 4 stations on the route. Truly fun train experience for both children and grownups!
