In April 2012, the start of an unprecedented era in commercial facilities begins with the opening of Shibuya Hikarie, a new commercial tower which is taking the concepts of shopping, dining, entertainment and business to new heights. It is located near Shibuya's iconic crossing, in the vicinity of Shibuya train station, providing new and easy access to many train and subway lines. Hi-tech signage and billboards throughout relay information in real time from all corners of Shibuya to numerous locations within the complex.
Housing theatres, galleries, event space and shopping floors, Hikarie will become the new mecca for Tokyo's art, culture, dining and information and will be considered the symbol of "Entertainment City Shibuya". While Shibuya has traditionally been known as an area that caters heavily to younger crowds, Hikarie intends to reach out to a broader audience. They plan to do this by offering more high-end dining, shopping, entertainment, culture and arts, etc. to a clientele that is more sophisticated, and is in a higher age and income bracket.
We can also see the embodiment of fresh and original ideas in ShinQs, a new concept in department stores. Each of its eight floors are given different themes, such as "Relax" or "Thrill" rather than "Shoe Department" or "Ladies Wear". Highly appealing are the innovative "Switch Rooms" which are restrooms, each designed differently, and each offering a special functions to "refresh" oneself, such oxygen bars and massage chairs, to name a few.
The ShinQs will also, for the first time in a large commercial facility, use environmentally kind lighting and cooling systems, as well as lever operated non-electrical automated doors, among other creative energy efficient methods.
Without a doubt, Hikarie will become Shibuya's new landmark!
