It takes a little longer because of traffic in Japan.
The overnight bus should really be your last possible option. I've done it several times. Everyone reclines of course, and the seats are so close that your nose almost touches the back of the seat in front of you. It's fairly comfortable though, and the bus also has a little lounge area. As long as you're the type who can 'sleep anywhere' it's not bad, and I suppose if you weren't then you would never travel in any kind of bus.
