Getting Yen before you leave - Check with your bank, some offer exchange services with no fees, some have high fees. Also many major cities and international airports have exchange service locations for a small fee.
Getting Yen in Japan - There are exchange services in airports and major train stations. You can also you're your international ATM card to get cash directly from your bank account at these locations. Be sure to let your bank know you will be out of the country and check with them about transaction fees. Find our international ATM list here!
Credit Cards - Japan in many places still rely heavily on cash, however in large cities and international hubs you can use your international credit cards freely. See a recent JNTO article about credit card use here! However, be sure to check with your card provider about fees and to let them know you will be in a foreign country!
Internet and Phone access:
Use your phone - Check with your carrier about data programs they offer! Most US carriers offer reasonable international data packages from $25 or less (one carrier is free!) You don't need to use phone minutes if you use programs like Skype or Line to keep in contact with people. Another benefit is you can use mapping programs or your favorite apps to help navigate Japan.
Rent a pocket Wi-Fi hotspot - If you are going with a group this is your best option. You can get a good unlimited data; use anywhere mobile hotspot starting around $13 a day. If multiple people split the price it can end up being a great deal.
Free Wi-Fi spots & Services - Many areas of Japan are making an effort to expand free Wi-Fi services for foreign visitors. For example see our Internet Access page for more information.
